Summary

During the period of study, of the books borrowed from their collections, your selected libraries featured 28026 book holding records and these have been associated with 19786 book edition records records across 21 genres. Of the books borrowed from your selected libraries, these were written by 12838 authors and had 11194 borrowers. Of these, 10578 (94.5%) were Male, 508 (4.54%) were Female, 26 (0.23%) were Unclear, 82 (0.73%) were Unknown. The selected libraries documented 162503 borrowing events, 154487 (95.07%) by Male borrowers, 7579 (4.66%) by Female borrowers, 45 (0.03%) by Unclear borrowers, 316 (0.19%) by Unknown borrowers. There were an average of 14.51 borrowings per borrower at the selected libraries and of the borrowed books, each book holding was borrowed an average of 5.8 times. At the selected libraries during the period of study, books were borrowed for 109 years between 1732 and 1840, with an average of 1490.85 borrowings per year.

Across the whole of the Books and Borrowing site, we use the following data structure and terminology. All titles in our dataset are categorised on four levels: Works, Editions, Holdings and Volumes. A work is a text considered as a conceptual object or whole (such as Adam Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations). An edition is a particular physical printing of a work (such as the 1776 quarto edition of Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations printed in London for William Strahan, Thomas Cadell and William Creech). A holding is a copy of an edition (or in some cases multiple editions, as when pamphlets are bound together) held at one of our libraries (such the copy of the 1776 quarto edition of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations held by the Advocates Library). A volume is a part of a holding (such as volume 2 of the Advocates Library’s copy of the 1776 Wealth of Nations).

Book Genre

A a book holding may have multiple genres and 24733 genre classifications have been applied to 28026 book holding records at your selected libraries. The first visualisation shows the total number of book holdings we have catalogued from your selected libraries (we have only catalogued books that are actually borrowed, not the entire collection), divided into sections for genre, while the second visualisation shows the total number of borrowing acts we have catalogued, divided into sections for the genre of the associated book. The comparison between the two shows the relative popularity of genres. If all genres were borrowed equally then the two visualisations would be the same. What is interesting is when the visualisations differ, as this shows where a particular genre is more (or less) popular than another. In the visualisations, press on a genre's segment to perform a search for its associated borrowing records.
